ImageFor most people graphic software can be a hard thing to learn.

I have used Adobe Photoshop and Corel Painter for a very long time and feel that I know my way around those applications. There is of course always something new to learn in such huge applications, but I feel comfortable working with 'em.

But when I joined the Rocket Theme template club I did not feel secure anymore... ;)

Andy's templates are done in former Macromedias Fireworks (now owned by Adobe). Fireworks is simply a totally different world compared to the two other applications that I love so much... How could he do it, why did he not use Photoshop as everyone else? Well I guess Andy had already seen the light, Fireworks is simply THE best application for web releated work. When you get to know Fireworks, Photoshop will suddenly be a boring experience (again when we talk about web releated work). There are simply so many cool features, that makes life so much more easy.

But I can only imagine people would still continue to use their regular applications, its not easy to make a sudden switch. But belive me it's worth it, Fireworks is really THAT cool.

I have selected a few links to great tutorials but also a nice 20mb zip file from Adobe, with some really good "get to know Fireworks documents". There is a 30 day free version available, so there is not really anything that should hold you back from trying out this killer web application!

Have fun!

Thomas, I completely agree with you. I also work in photoshop occasionally, but ALL my web work is done in Fireworks. It's so much faster and much more intuitive. I've recently started building sites in Joomla as well, and have enjoyed your tutorials over at Rockettheme. If you don't mind, I'd like to mention a CD Quicktime video tutorial that I authored. Published by Course Technology and available here. I placed a special emphasis on planning FW designs for CSS layouts.

Best,
Dave

Happy that you have enjoyed the tutorials over at Rocket Themes. I hope that I will be able to provide more in the future.
I would really love to see the video tutorial you have made, but I am not sure what went wrong with the url you attached, it might be ubb related or perhaps something different went wrong - could you type it again?
Thanks in advance
Thomas

  Thomas,
Many thanks for these links to tutorials (and yours too!). As someone whose skills are in therapy rather than web design the learning curve since discovering Joomla just 4 months ago has been very steep! There is just so much to take on board with the basics, plus getting all the add on components etc to work, that when I looked at Fireworks and discovered nothing worked as I expected I nearly gave up. But having a list of tutorials, and hearing that your initial reaction was similar to mine (despite your years of experience) makes me think it is worth having another go. Thanks again.

  Your welcome Frances.
Fireworks was a little odd to begin with, but once you understand the basics is a pretty fun and very useful application. I have just launched a new tutorial, that should be easy to follow as well.
Take care
Thomas
